Governor Trustee Mentoring

What does mentoring offer?

Unlike training, the mentor is there to work exclusively on your goals and challenges. The mentor does not come with a predetermined agenda, but instead uses their knowledge and experience to support you in working through a particular area of focus.
Unlike a coach, a mentor will at times offer ideas and guidance, but they will also encourage you to develop knowledge and skills so that you can improve your own capacity for effective governance in the future.
Ultimately, the mentor is not there to take away your decision making, but to support you in making the best decision you can by utilising knowledge and experience you may lack at the current time. A mentor can help you to think things through, offering a realistic assessment of the likely outcomes of specific courses of action based on their experiences. You still choose how to proceed at the end of the conversation.

When can I start?

We have a range of different mentors with whom you can work. Depending on your needs you can match you with an appropriate mentor. Getting started could be as quick as a week, depending on availability. View all mentors profiles here

Who will the mentors be?

At LLSE we believe that those involved in mentoring board members, should themselves be experienced board members. We, therefore, require all mentors to have current or recent experience of serving on a board. Most of our mentors are also trained and experienced coaches at an executive level, so are used to working to support senior leaders.
Who exactly you work with as your mentor will also depend on the area of governance you wish to focus on. Our mentors come from a vast array of backgrounds and so cover all phases and school types and have had experiences of working with a huge range of governance issues. How frequently would the sessions be?

You and your mentor will agree that between you. Some people may want a very quick succession of sessions to deal with a specific issue, or to quickly undertake induction to their new role on the board; others may want to work with a mentor over a year or longer developing their skills. Once you have bought the package you can arrange this to suit your needs.
